THE FREEDOM GAREDEN

CAUSINGS RECORD RELEASE

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colin Fisher (Toronto)
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Colin-Fisher
solo sax

"Fisher's approach to the tenor saxophone is highly harmolodic, creating fleeting tapestries of sound that run the whole scale of the instrument's capabilities and layering shimmering building blocks of melody. Despite the intensity of his flights, there is a resolute warmness to Fisher’s tone and pitch-perfect precision to his placing of notes that speaks to a mastery of his instrument, but it’s one he’s willing to recklessly abandon in bursts of perfectly timed fire-breathing fury." --- Tombed Vision Records

Anastasia Clarke / Colin Fisher / Sandy Gordon
http://anastasiaclarke.info/
From 2012-14, Sandy Gordon and Anastasia Clarke stretched wavering collages into smeared song forms under Anastasia's songwriting vehicle, Silent Isle. The duo's recent collaborations continue their commitment to deep listening and improvisation, swapping Sandy's drums for a rotating assemblage of small percussion, homemade field recordings, electronics, and found objects; and trading Anastasia's guitar loops for samplers and various sound-making devices. Their forthcoming cassette as Silent Isle, RES/URU/SER, will be released by ((Cave)) Recordings in July.

Thursday, December 11th
Ben Seretan and David Moore

DAVID MOORE, performing solo, is the composer and piano player behind Bing & Ruth, an ambient, largely acoustic chamber ensemble that put out one of the best records of this year. "Tomorrow Was the Golden Age" goes extremely hard and is a big F.U. to all of those who have given up on the soft, rounded corners of living:

BEN SERETAN is a guitar player and a singer who performs in a wide variety of formations - solo, duo, trio, full band, etc. He spent the last two summers in southeast Alaska and got to know the out-of-tune pianos that came limping by boat to the small island he was living on. They whispered soft, sweet things to him and tonight he'll tell their secrets. He also put out a record this year which rules and is full of stampedes of drums and launched bee-hives of guitars:

Totara Jack & Special Guests!

Totara Jack

Over two years in New Delhi, Cameron Deyell wrote songs as a way to make sense of life in an intense and crazy mega-city. His textural guitar playing and ghostly vocals created a parallel world where he escaped from the modern Indian miracle. Taking the New Zealand nickname of his grandmother’s great-grandfather, he slowly became Totara Jack.

Maitri with Ben Schapiro!

Translated from Sanskrit, Maitri (”my tree”) means undeniable love, compassion, and friendship. This group was formed to embrace both the hardship and ecstasy of life through song. Based on her experiences with loving the self and others, Caroline Davis (voice and saxophone) has created a collection of songs to bring people to place of acceptance.

Mobile since her birth in Singapore, Caroline now lives in Brooklyn, New York. She has shared the stage with a diverse group of musicians, including Erin McKeown, Allison Miller, Jenny Owen Youngs, Matt Wilson, Ellis Marsalis, Bobby Broom, and Dennis Carroll. Her jazz quartet album, Live Work & Play, was featured on All About Jazz’s best releases of th eyear and she was named one of Jazztimes’ Best New Artists in the 2012 Expanded Critics’ Poll. She is a regular member of many outfits including Chicago-based Fatbook, Deep Fayed, and Orso, as well as New York-based Cotyledons.

Maitri is heavily influenced by soul and jazz music, as well as modern R&B. Ben Hoffmann (keyboards), Sam Weber (bass), Jay Sawyer (drums), and Neak (emcee) round out this soulful band.

Two Awesome performances--
Ed Askew Band & Abhay Singh 7-10pm!
Fred Fredovitch of the Shrines Birthday Blowout w/ DJ Jonathan Toubin!  Starting at 10pm!

7pm No cover-

Ed Askew is known for his 1972 mystikal tiple album on the infamous ESP-Disk label.

However, Askew has been working on new music in New York for decades. Along with 'Little Eyes' (DeStijl) and 'Imperfiction' (Drag City), he regularly self-releases albums and has been on tour stints including one in support of Bill Callahan.

Ed Askew Band has been playing in NYC for the past three years; 'For the World' (Tin Angel) was released last year -- produced by Jerry David DeCicca and featuring Sharon van Etten, Marc Ribot, and Mary Lattimore -- and Askew toured Europe for the first time.

A new album for Tin Angel will be made this summer. This special performance at Manhattan Inn will feature Ed Askew Band playing all the songs from that forthcoming recording.

---

Abhay Singh is a champagne socialist shrouded in the Bible, Christianity, doo-wop, and country music, utilizing clichés but not cliché. He is a crooner and the live set is particularly musical.

Sasha Dobson & Wild Leaves

SASHA DOBSON - 10:00pm

Sasha Dobson grew up in Santa Cruz, CA. Her father Smith Dobson was one of the Bay Area’s most influential and in-demand pianists, her mom a well-known singer and her brother an accomplished drummer.

By the time she was 12, Sasha was performing with the entire family at the Monterey Jazz Festival. She moved to Brooklyn at 17 and quickly assimilated into the NYC jazz scene, releasing 2005’s The Darkling Thrush, recorded with The Chris Byars Octet, and Modern Romance (2006). The latter, which won praise from TIME Magazine, was produced by Jesse Harris.

She began playing in dive bars with her friend Norah Jones, who invited Sasha to join her on tour. Dobson’s most recent album, Aquarius (2013), was recorded with guitarist/producer Joel Hamilton (Black Keys, Tom Waits, Sparklehorse) and hailed by MAGNET as “raw and compelling.” She and her band performed at Farm Aid 2013 and Dobson opened for Willie Nelson on a series of early 2014 dates.

WILD LEAVES - 11:30pm

Wild Leaves is an American band based in Brooklyn, New York. Their songs and sun-drenched harmonies will remind you of the sounds of the west coast in the 70's.

"Wild Leaves brings comforting, warm songs into an often faced paced and cold city"
Deli Magazine

"There is a lovely warmth to their music, something we are continually drawn to."
Folk Radio UK

"Simply put, it is absolutely brilliant."
Mad Mackerel

"Illustrious... sweeping vocal harmonies, which flow through the track like a fresh breeze on a humid day."
Obscure Sound

"Wonderfully mellow and beautifully harmonized."
Vivid Lagoon

Tatsuya Nakatani solo Drums

Nakatani's approach to music is visceral, non-linear and intuitively primitive, expressing an unusually strong spirit while avoiding any categorization. He creates sound via both traditional and extended percussion techniques, utilizing drums, bowed gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects and bells, as well as various sticks, kitchen tools and homemade bows, all of which manifest in an intense and organic music that represents a very personal sonic world. His approach is steeped in the sensibilities of free improvisation, experimental music, jazz, rock, and noise, and yet retains the sense of space and quiet beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music. His percussion instruments can imitate the sounds of a trumpet, a stringed instrument or an electronic device to the extent that it becomes difficult to recognize the source of the sound. He has devoted himself to a musical aesthetic where rhythm gives way to pulse, often in a way that is not always audible or visible, in currents that incorporate silence and texture. Nakatani’s primary music activities include
solo percussion performance, N.G.O. (Nakatani Gong Orchestra) and collaborations with musicians and dancers both in live performance and recordings.

Show starts at 10pm! No Cover.

Mike Wexler, Eartheater, & Brent Cordero

Almost perversely skilled in the Jansch-ian school of acoustic guitar picking,Mike Wexler snake-charmed the Brooklyn underground in the mid-2000s with his free-form songs and druidic Robyn Hitchcock voice. A startlingly affecting and spare debut released on I and Ear Records in 2005 immediately placed Wexler far above his dronier freak-folk peers. He pursued more expansive territory with full band instrumentation and captivating arrangements on Sun Wheel, the elliptical 2007 release on Amish Records. Wexler returned in 2012 with Dispossession. His first recording for Mexican Summer, Dispossession was the result of over two years of intermittent recording, an eerily beautiful sound world featuring guest appearances from members of White Magic and the Occasion as well as a host of N.Y.C. improvisers.

"TOMAGA channels percussive energy via analogue synthesizers, effects and contact microphones to create a collision of vibrating rhythms and tones. TOMAGA actively seeks to transport the musicians and audience to zones outside of conventional musical experience via extended duration improvisations using instruments that are pushed beyond their normal limits. TOMAGA is the manifestation of two musician's boredom at playing within conventional musical modes."

Super Hi Fi & Tispy Oxcart!

Super Hi Fi
The Brooklyn-based band Super Hi-Fi mixes jazz-inflected trombones, the rhythmic landscapes of Jamaican dub and touches of afrobeat and funk for a unique and heady mix memorably described as an ‘imaginary soundtrack from Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, The Specials and Led Zeppelin.’ Led by bassist and composer Ezra Gale, whose last outfit, the San Francisco-based Aphrodesia, took their take on afrobeat all the way to Femi Kuti’s Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria, Super Hi-Fi has been creating waves in the fertile New York music scene since 2010 and released their debut full-length album, “Dub To The Bone” (Electric Cowbell Records), in 2012.

Tipsy Oxcart
Tipsy Oxcart plays electric, sweaty, bumpin’ Balkan music, channeling the spirit of 36 hour weddings to keep the crowds dancing until the sun comes up. Serving up originals and fresh, upbeat arrangements of urban dance tunes, the band deviously infuses the sounds of South-Eastern Europe with elements of jazz, funk, and more. Dig naughty violin solos, atomic accordion grooves, freak-me-out clarinet, and the baddest rhythm section this side of the Mediterranean. A party with Tipsy Oxcart is guaranteed to shake the dance floor all night long!

Makandal Drummers & 75 Dollar Bill! 4:30! Free!

Late afternoon show! This is going to be a one time-dont miss this-amazing show! Starts at 4:30!

Makandal Drummers: NYC-based Haitian drumming group Makandal (members of La Troupe Makandal) and guitar/percussion duo 75 Dollar Bill (Che Chen and Rick Brown) play music, both traditional and invented...
Makandal will play first, at 4:30, playing from their repertoire which derives from the sacred music and dance of Vodou, widely misunderstood in the United States as “voodoo” and which includes, as well, the music and dance of springtime festivals, work, and play.

75 Dollar Bill: 75 Dollar Bill's recent performance prompted this observation from the New York Time's Ben Ratliff: "...this wasn't musicology. Mr. Chen may have manipulated his equipment to make it more Mauritanian, but Mr. Brown has done the opposite: Instead of the tbal, the traditional bowl-shaped hand-drum, he had a wooden box and mallets as well as a small cymbal with a crack in it, and a few shakers. He upset the hierarchy of his material, making the trashy-sounding cymbal or shaker as important to the rhythm as anything else." The duo's set will begin around 6:00

Brian Chase-Drums and Drones, Twins of El Dorado, Little King

Awesome lineup! 10pm. No cover
10pm: Brian Chase - Drums and Drones
11pm: Twins of El Dorado
12 midnight: Little King

Drums and Drones is the solo project of Brian Chase. Born initially from inspiration by La Monte Young and Marian Zazeela’s Dream House installation in NYC, D & D takes as its task the investigation of the acoustic properties of drums and percussion. From here, expansive soundscapes are constructed, like aural snapshots of tone, uncovering the richness of sonic depth hidden within the resonance of these instruments. The music is built according to the principles of Just Intonation, a method commonly known as “nature’s tuning system.”

Twins of El Dorado is a modern art song ensemble featuring vocalist Kristin Slipp and trumpeter Joe Moffett. A highly experimental and collaborative duo, Slipp and Moffett explore/explode conventions of sound, voice and meaning, taking the art song format in new and interesting directions. Twins of El Dorado has performed in various settings including acclaimed venues such as The Stone and Issue Project Room in New York and Jordan Hall in Boston. The duo’s debut album Portend the End was released on the Brooklyn-based label Prom Night Records on March 1, 2013 and garnered praise in a number of publications including The New York City Jazz Record, Lucid Culture and KILLED in CARS. They recorded their follow-up album, currently titled Verses, in December and January 2013/2014.

Little King is a vocal/chamber/poppyrock ensemble, featuring the music of Michael Sachs. The group includes Andrew Halchak-clarinet, Michael Sachs-bass clarinet, Tomas Cruz-voice, Richard Saunders-voice, and Tim Norton-bass. The songs are fairly short, so not much of a commitment is required in listening to a song or 5. Give it a shot. Maybe you'll like our music. Maybe you'll fall in love with us. Maybe we'll have your children......LITTLE KING.
